What kind of course are you looking for

The label flower course covers very different things. Before choosing, be clear about what you want from it.

  • Short workshops of a few hours: for enthusiasts, couples, groups of friends. You learn to make an arrangement, a bouquet or a wreath and take it home. Many are seasonal: the Advent wreath, the spring bouquet, the dried flower crown.
  • Multi-session courses: for those who want to learn the basics properly, from choosing and caring for flowers to arranging techniques.
  • Professional courses and masterclasses: for people who want to work in the trade, or florists who want to develop. Longer, with advanced techniques, installations, how to run a wedding or an event, sometimes with hands-on practice at real events.
  • Workshops for companies: team building, client events, activities for hotel or wedding guests. The floral designer brings materials and teachers wherever needed.

The guide to flower arranging courses and workshops helps you find your way.

Workshops during a wedding or event

A trend at multi-day weddings, especially international ones, is a workshop for guests: the morning after the party or the day before, in the garden, everyone makes small bouquets or flower crowns. It also works as an activity for children or for a hen party. If you are interested, ask your wedding floral designer: they can often run it with the same flowers used for the wedding. See the page on floral designers for destination weddings.

What to look for in a course

Look at who teaches and what they do outside the course: a floral designer who works on weddings and events brings real experience. Check how many participants there are per teacher, how much time is spent working with your hands compared with theory, whether flowers and materials are included, and whether you take home what you make. For professional courses, ask whether there is a certificate, whether there are hours of practice at real events and what support is available afterwards.

Many floral designers now also teach foam-free techniques and work with seasonal flowers. If this approach interests you, see the page on sustainable floral designers.

How much it costs

We do not give figures: a two-hour workshop and a multi-day masterclass cannot be compared. The items are teaching hours, number of teachers, flowers and materials (often the largest cost), use of the space and tools, and any meals. For company workshops, travel, set-up and group management come on top. Always ask what is included and what happens if the course is cancelled or moved.

What to ask before you sign up

  • Who teaches, and how much experience do they have with weddings and events?
  • What is the maximum number of participants?
  • Are flowers, materials and tools included?
  • What do I take home at the end?
  • For professional courses, how many hours of practice are included?

If you already work in the trade and are looking for event collaborations, read the guide on working with floral designers on events. If you want to organise a workshop for a group or a company, ask for up to 3 quotes with the number of people, place and date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience for a flower workshop?

No, short workshops are designed for complete beginners. Professional courses and masterclasses, on the other hand, often expect some basics, or at least a strong motivation to work in the trade.

Can a flower workshop be organised for a company?

Yes, many floral designers run team building and client activities, at your offices or at a venue. Ask for a quote with the number of people, duration and place.

Does a flower arranging course give a certificate?

Some professional courses issue a certificate of attendance. It is not a required qualification to work as a florist in Italy: practice is what counts, so ask how many hours you actually spend working with flowers.

Can we hold a workshop for our wedding guests?

Yes, it is an increasingly popular activity at multi-day weddings. The floral designer can run it with the same flowers used for the wedding, for adults or children.
