A Sardinia wedding

In Sardinia most weddings are close to the sea. In the north-east is the Costa Smeralda, with Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and Baja Sardinia, and Gallura, with San Pantaleo, Arzachena and the stazzi (traditional stone farmhouses) among granite boulders. In the north-west are Alghero and Stintino. In the south are Cagliari, the coast at Chia and Villasimius. Inland there are villages, agriturismi (farm stays) and estates among the vineyards.

Typical venues are seaside villas, resorts, terraces above small coves, restored stazzi, beaches and country churches. The list includes floral designers based in Olbia, Gallura, Sassari, Alghero and Cagliari. Each profile lists the areas covered.

An island: flowers by ship and long distances

Part of the cut flowers come from the mainland by ship or plane. That means deadlines to meet, orders placed early, and less room for last-minute changes. Ask the floral designer where the flowers come from and how far ahead they need to confirm the order. If you are thinking of bringing flowers from abroad, first read the guide to bringing flowers into Italy.

The island is large and inland roads are slow: from Cagliari to the Costa Smeralda takes several hours. Choose a studio close to your venue or allow for travel and accommodation. In high season the Costa Smeralda is very busy and resorts have strict supplier hours.

Wind and sun

The maestrale (mistral) is the island's strongest and most frequent wind, especially in the north. It can blow for days. Arches and structures must be weighted down carefully, table arrangements kept low and stable, candles enclosed in lanterns, and petals on the sand will not stay put for long. The summer sun is intense and there is little shade on the beach: delicate flowers do not last. June and September are the most popular months; May and October are quieter.

Beach weddings follow the rules of the Comune (town council) and of the state beach concessions: ask the venue or the Comune what can be set up and for how long.

The island's flowers and greenery

The landscape offers Mediterranean maquis: myrtle, mastic, helichrysum, rosemary, juniper, wild olive, and broom in spring. These materials stand up to wind and heat and last longer than many cut flowers. Sardinian floral designers use them often, but they work in every style. Read the guide to a Sardinia wedding.

What wedding flowers cost in Sardinia

Price ranges are indicative. More than elsewhere, costs rise with shipping flowers from the mainland, weighted structures, and travel and accommodation in high season. On the Costa Smeralda prices tend to be high. Read the guide to budgeting flowers for a destination wedding.

What to ask the floral designer

  • Where do the flowers come from, and when must the order be confirmed?
  • How do you secure arches and arrangements in the mistral?
  • Have you worked at this resort or on this beach before?
  • Is travel between the north and south of the island included?

Once you have a date and a venue, request up to 3 quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also work on the Costa Smeralda and in Porto Cervo?

Several floral designers on the list are based in Gallura or cover it regularly. Check the areas on each profile and ask whether they know the resort or villa.

What about the south, in Chia or Villasimius?

Yes, the list includes studios based in Cagliari and the south of the island. For a venue far from the studio, ask about travel and accommodation.

Can the mistral ruin the flowers?

It can cause trouble for tall structures and light arrangements. A floral designer used to the island plans weights, low shapes and a sheltered plan B.

Do all the flowers come from the mainland?

Some do; others are grown or gathered on the island, such as greenery from the maquis. Ask the floral designer what local options they suggest.
