Friuli Venezia Giulia is a border region between the Alps and the Adriatic, with Italian, Austrian and Slavic influences. Trieste has Central European palazzi, historic cafés and castles by the sea. Udine and Cividale del Friuli have historic centres and palazzi. The Collio, around Cormons, and the Colli Orientali are white-wine country, with wineries and agriturismi (farm stays) among the vines. On the coast are Grado, with its old town on the lagoon, and Lignano. Aquileia and Palmanova offer Roman history and a star-shaped fortress town. To the north, Carnia and the Tarvisio area have mountains and Alpine lakes.
Many couples also come from Austria, Slovenia and Germany. The list includes floral designers based in Trieste, Udine, Pordenone and Gorizia. Each profile lists the areas covered and the languages spoken.
In Trieste and on the Karst plateau blows the bora, a north-easterly wind that can be very strong, especially in autumn and winter. For an outdoor ceremony there you need weighted structures, low arrangements and a covered plan B; when the bora is strong, outdoor ceremonies move inside. On the coast summer is hot and breezy, on the plain muggy, in the mountains cool even in July. May, June and September are the most popular months, and the Collio in autumn, with the harvest and the colours of the leaves, is much in demand.
Central Trieste has steep climbs and pedestrian zones: agree unloading and timings. In Grado the old town is tight, and the lagoon has islands reachable only by boat. The Collio wineries are on hills with narrow roads, but short distances between them. Castles and historic houses have rules on candles, fixings and timings: ask for the rules.
The region is close to Venice and the eastern Veneto: some Friulian floral designers work there too, and vice versa. See the Venice and Veneto wedding florists.
Friuli has a good nursery tradition on the plain. The landscape offers vines, cherry blossom in spring, chestnut and beech, and on the Karst the smoke bush (sommacco), which turns fiery red in autumn. These are possible materials, not obligations: Friulian floral designers also work in minimal, romantic or classic styles. For seasonal ideas, read the guide to seasonal flowers in Italy and the one on greenery and foliage in wedding designs.
Price ranges are indicative. A bridal bouquet is often between €100 and €350, low centrepieces between €40 and €150 each. Costs rise with wind-proof structures, travel to the mountains and the plan B. Read the guide to wedding flower prices.
Once you have a date and a venue, request up to 3 quotes.
Several floral designers on the list are based in Trieste or cover it regularly. Ask how they deal with the bora and the steep streets of the centre.
Yes, the Collio and the Colli Orientali are among the areas most covered by designers based in Udine and Gorizia. Check the areas on each profile.
Some can, but Venice needs boat logistics. Ask whether they have worked in the lagoon before and how they bring the flowers.
When the bora is very strong, outdoor ceremonies move under cover. That is why in Trieste and on the Karst a plan B is not optional.
