An Umbria wedding

Umbria is a region of hill towns, castles, abbeys and stone farmhouses. You can marry in Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Gubbio, Montefalco among the Sagrantino vineyards, around Lake Trasimeno and in greener valleys such as the Valnerina. Typical venues are medieval castles, country houses, former convents, agriturismi (farm stays) and wineries.

Umbria appeals to couples looking for a quieter alternative to Tuscany, with similar landscapes and a slower pace. The list includes floral designers based in Perugia, Terni and the hill towns, plus some Tuscan or Roman studios that also work here. Each profile lists the areas covered.

Hill towns and gravel roads

Many Umbrian towns sit on top of a hill, with historic centres closed to traffic, sloping alleys and stairways. Unloading often happens outside the town walls and materials go up by hand or small vehicle. Country farmhouses are sometimes reached by strade bianche (gravel roads) that become hard going for a loaded van after rain. Always ask the floral designer whether they have worked at the venue before.

Castles and convents have rules on fixings, candles and timings. Some venues host only one wedding a day and leave more time for set-up; others do not.

Flowers and landscape

Umbria has a strong flower tradition: in Spello, for Corpus Domini, the streets are covered with carpets of petals, and in many towns these infiorate are part of the local festa. In summer the fields fill with poppies, broom, cornflowers and sunflowers, and around the farmhouses there are olives, lavender and rosemary. The wildflower look is much loved here, but Umbrian floral designers also work in classic or contemporary styles. Read the guide to wildflowers for your wedding and the one to an Umbria wedding.

Climate and seasons

Summer is hot in the valleys and breezier on the hills; evenings in May and October can be cool. Spring and September are the most requested months. In autumn the grape harvest and the new olive oil bring warm colours and materials such as olive branches and vine leaves.

What wedding flowers cost in Umbria

Price ranges are indicative. A bridal bouquet is often between €100 and €350, low centrepieces between €40 and €150 each. Costs rise with travel to remote farmhouses, carrying everything by hand in hill towns, and long banquet tables outdoors. Read the guide to wedding flower prices.

What to ask the floral designer

  • Where do you unload and how do you reach the venue?
  • Have you worked in this town or castle before?
  • Do you offer wildflowers that are grown, or picked with permission?
  • Do you also work near the Tuscan and Lazio borders?

If you are coming from abroad, read how to work with a floral designer remotely. Once you have a date and a venue, request up to 3 quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also work in Assisi and Spello?

Yes, they are among the most requested places and many Umbrian floral designers work there often. In the historic centres, ask how they get the flowers to the venue.

What about Orvieto or Lake Trasimeno?

Several studios cover the whole region; others stay in their own province. Check the areas on each profile and ask about travel.

Can a Tuscan florist work in Umbria?

Yes, especially near the border, between Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana. Ask whether they know the venue and how they charge for the journey.

Can we pick wildflowers for the wedding?

Only with the landowner's permission and in line with the rules on protected species. Usually the floral designer uses grown flowers that give the same effect.
