In Milan you can marry in historic palazzi, cloisters, hotels, rooftop terraces and former industrial spaces turned into event lofts. Outside the city the options change: eighteenth-century villas in Brianza, wineries and estates in Franciacorta, the upper town of Bergamo (Città Alta), castles and villages in the Oltrepò Pavese, palazzi and courtyards in Mantua, and cascine (traditional farmsteads) on the plains around Lodi and Cremona. The lakes have their own pages: Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda.
Milan is also a city of fashion and design. Many Milanese floral designers work on catwalk shows, product launches and corporate events, and bring a more contemporary language to weddings: installations, bold colours, unusual materials. Others stay with a classic look. The list includes both.
Central Milan has the Area C congestion zone and rules on access and parking for commercial vehicles. Palazzi and hotels often have narrow courtyards, small goods lifts and fixed delivery times. For a city-centre venue, ask the floral designer how they handle unloading and permits.
Outside the city, distances and Friday and Saturday afternoon traffic matter. Villas in Brianza and the cascine often let you choose your suppliers, but have rules on candles and music hours.
The Lombardy plain has hot, humid summers and cold, foggy winters. In July and August flowers at outdoor ceremonies struggle, and in the city many couples prefer June or September. Winter in Milan is a good season for a palazzo wedding, though, with candles, dark greenery and glasshouse flowers. Read the guide to a winter wedding.
Milan has a large wholesale flower market where many of the region's florists buy their stock: the choice is wide all year, although seasonal flowers remain the best value. See the guide to seasonal flowers in Italy.
Price ranges are indicative. A bridal bouquet is often between €100 and €350, low centrepieces between €40 and €150 each, and suspended installations start at a few thousand euros. In the city, tight timings, permits and goods lifts add to the cost; outside the city, travel does. Read the guide to wedding flower prices and the one on how to read a quote.
If you are drawn to large-scale designs, see the page on floral installations. Once you have a date and a venue, request up to 3 quotes.
Many will: Brianza, Franciacorta and the lakes are regularly covered from Milan. Check the areas on each profile and ask how they charge for travel.
Several Lombardy studios do. Vehicle access to the Città Alta is limited: ask how they get flowers and structures to the venue.
Entering Area C and parking there follow the city's rules for commercial vehicles. The supplier usually takes care of it, but have it written into the quote.
Yes: palazzi, hotels and cloisters work well, with warm lighting and glasshouse flowers. Winter dates are often easier to find.
