This page brings together two choices that often overlap. The first is about style: dried and preserved flowers, which do not wilt, keep well and have colours and textures different from fresh ones. The second is about how the work is done: local and seasonal flowers, less transport, no floral foam, reusing flowers between ceremony and reception, and finding a home for them after the event. A floral designer may do one, the other or both.
In each profile you will find what the designer states on their own website. We do not hand out sustainability badges: we give you the questions to check.
Dried flowers are air-dried or dried with other techniques; preserved flowers are treated so they stay soft and coloured for a long time. They work well for bouquets you want to keep, flower crowns, buttonholes, winter designs, and for guests who are allergic to fresh pollen. They can be prepared in advance and do not suffer in the heat the way fresh flowers do.
They do have limits, though: they are more fragile to the touch, some shed, they must be kept away from candles and flames because they burn easily, and they lack the scent of fresh flowers. Many designs mix dried and fresh. The guide to dried and preserved flowers explains when to choose them.
The guide to sustainable floral design goes into detail and helps you spot vague promises.
A sustainable design does not necessarily cost more. Seasonal, local flowers often cost less than imported ones, and reusing flowers between ceremony and reception saves money. What can cost more is foam-free work, which takes longer, and good-quality dried or preserved flowers, which cost more per stem than fresh. Ask for an itemised quote that shows which sustainable choices are included.
If the design is for a wedding, start from the page on wedding florists. For companies looking for low-impact events there is the page on corporate event flowers. When you are ready, ask for up to 3 quotes and say in your request what matters to you.
It lasts much longer than fresh, even years, if kept away from direct light, damp and dust. Over time the colours fade and the flowers become more fragile.
Dried flowers are dehydrated and become stiff; preserved flowers are treated to stay soft and coloured for a long time. Preserved flowers look closer to fresh, but usually cost more.
Sometimes a little, because it takes more work and different structures. It is often balanced out by seasonal flowers and reuse, though: ask your floral designer to compare the two options.
They can help, because many release less pollen than fresh flowers, but they are not allergen-free and can hold dust. If some guests have strong allergies, ask your floral designer which ones to choose.
