A petal toss marks your exit from the church or ceremony, in place of rice or paper confetti. Fresh petals add colour but stain when trodden on; dried petals are lighter and more practical. They are handed out in cones, little bags or baskets, often with help from the bridesmaids.
Many Italian churches and some town halls have rules on what can be thrown and who cleans up: check with them first. The guide on petal tosses and the couple's exit covers materials, quantities and rules; the one on flowers for bridesmaids and page boys shows how to involve children; the one on flowers for a civil wedding covers town hall spaces. Peony and rose petals are among the most used.
What to ask: how many cones you need for your guests, whether the petals are fresh or dried, and who brings them out at the right moment.
