A wedding in Abruzzo and Molise

Abruzzo and Molise bring sea and mountains together within a few dozen kilometres. On the coast are Pescara, Giulianova, Ortona and the Trabocchi Coast down to Vasto, with its old wooden fishing platforms (trabocchi) suspended over the sea. Inland are L'Aquila, Sulmona, the Navelli plateau, the Gran Sasso villages such as Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio, the Majella and Scanno. In Molise there are Termoli on the sea, Campobasso, Isernia and villages such as Agnone.

You can marry in villas and agriturismi (farm stays) in the hills, castles, mountain villages, wineries among the vines and seafront restaurants. These regions see less mass tourism and are chosen by couples who want a smaller wedding or have family roots here. Traditions: confetti and the bride's home

Sulmona is the home of confetti, the sugared almonds handed out at Italian weddings, and in many Abruzzo families confetti also become decoration: flowers and ears of wheat made of confetti, table arrangements, favours. Logistics between sea and mountains

Distances look short, but mountain roads are slow and can be snowy in winter. Mountain villages have sloping historic centres, often closed to traffic, where materials are carried by hand. On the Trabocchi Coast some restaurants sit on narrow platforms over the water, with very little room for flowers: ask the floral designer to see the place first.

Climate, seasons and flowers

The coast has hot, breezy summers; inland, evenings are cool even in July and winters are cold. May, June and September are the most popular months. In late spring the mountain meadows bloom, the Navelli plateau is known for saffron in autumn, and several areas have lavender fields in early summer.
