A hanging installation takes the flowers up high: clouds of flowers above the banquet table, garlands hung from beams, hoops or floral chandeliers. It works in rooms with high ceilings, under pergolas and inside a marquee.
It is one of the most complex jobs: you need checked rigging points, certified materials when the venue asks for them, ladders or platforms, more people and many hours of set-up. Flowers without water have to cope with the heat that rises to the ceiling, so preserved flowers or dried ones are often used. The guide to hanging floral installations covers loads, timings and costs; the one on extra costs shows the hidden lines; the one on the flower designer's team explains the crews.
What to ask: who authorises the rigging, who is insured, and how long breakdown takes at the end of the night.
