Ruscus is a green with long stems and small, glossy, dark green leaves. It is one of the toughest: it lasts many days even out of water, which makes it perfect for garlands, runners along a banquet table, arches and installations. So-called Italian ruscus is used at weddings all over the world.
It is inexpensive, easy to work with and gives a clean, elegant look. On its own it can look a little uniform, so it is often mixed with eucalyptus or olive. Butcher's broom (pungitopo), its wild relative, is protected in several Italian regions and must not be picked. The guide to greenery in floral design explains where to use it; the one on saving money on wedding flowers suggests it for keeping the budget down; the one on welcome signs recommends it for pieces that stay outside all day.
What to ask: how much of the greenery will be ruscus, whether it will be mixed with other foliage.
