Some toxic plants are common in floral design: oleander, widespread in gardens in southern Italy, lily of the valley, foxglove, amaryllis, poinsettia with its irritating sap, and some winter berries. They are not a problem when used sensibly, but they must be kept away from food, small children and animals.
The practical rule: no toxic flowers on the buffet, on the cake or near plates, and nothing dangerous in flower crowns or children's posies. If in doubt, ask your florist and check with health sources. The guide to flowers near food explains the rules; the one on flowers for bridesmaids, flower girls and page boys covers the youngest guests; the one on Christmas floral decorations lists the winter plants.
What to ask: which flowers in the design are toxic and where they will be placed.
