In short
- June is the month of garden roses at their best, with hydrangeas, lavender and delphiniums.
- Peonies are ending: in the North there are still some early in the month, in the South rarely.
- The first heat arrives: later set-ups, water and shade for the flowers.
- It is peak season: book early and ask who will actually look after your event.
June is a much-loved month to get married, in Italy and among couples who fly in. The days are the longest of the year, so ceremonies can begin in the late afternoon and end in the sunset light. For flowers it is a month of plenty, but also of change: peonies leave, hydrangeas arrive, and the heat starts to matter. This guide to June wedding flowers in Italy helps you choose well.
The seasons given are indicative: for the whole year see our guide to seasonal flowers in Italy month by month. If you are looking for a professional, our list of wedding florists is organised by region and service.

Roses have their own guide: roses at your wedding.

Greenery and fruit in June
Greenery is full and dark: olive, vine, fig, bay, rosemary, mint, eucalyptus. Apricots, cherries, plums and, in the South, the first figs appear. Some florists use them on long banquet tables and buffets, always agreeing with the caterer what can sit near the food.
North, Centre and South in June
| Area | Typical weather | What works | Typical problems |
|---|---|---|---|
| North, lakes, mountains | Moderate heat, afternoon storms | Peonies early in the month, roses, delphiniums, alpine meadows | Sudden storms, mosquitoes by the lake |
| Centre | Hot, long days | Roses, lavender, olive, meadow flowers | Strong midday sun, dust on dry lawns |
| South and islands | Properly hot, windy | Sturdy flowers, olive, citrus, succulents | Direct sun, scirocco (hot southern wind), limited water at some venues |
In the mountains, June is often the start of the season: alpine meadows are in flower and designs can be light. Remember, though, that many high-altitude wild flowers are protected and cannot be picked: your florist will use cultivated flowers with the same effect. In the South, June is already full summer: couples marry at sunset, and flowers need to be kept out of the afternoon sun.
The first heat and how flowers hold up
In June the heat often arrives without warning. The flowers most at risk are hydrangeas, peonies, sweet peas and gardenias. Those that cope better are sturdy roses, lisianthus, calla lilies, carnations, lilies, lavender and tough greenery such as olive and bay.
What helps:
- setting up outdoor arrangements as late as possible;
- using containers with a water source;
- keeping bouquets and buttonholes somewhere cool until the last moment;
- placing the ceremony arch in a shaded spot for the time of the service.
For more, read our guide to flowers that cope with the heat.
High season: what changes
In June many florists work every weekend, sometimes with more than one event on the same day. That is fine as long as you know beforehand. Ask who will be at the set-up, how many people will work on your event and whether clearing up late at night is included. Venues also often host back-to-back events, with tight windows for getting in and out.
Venues and guests from abroad in June
June venues
June is when almost every venue is open and looking its best. That changes how you design the flowers:
- in villas with gardens the flower beds are already in bloom, and you often need fewer arrangements than you think;
- at masserie and farmhouses in the South the fields start to turn golden: olive, lavender and wheat blend in better than very bright flowers;
- on Lake Como, Lake Garda and the other lakes, sunset light reflects off the water, and pale tones read well in photos;
- in the mountains meadows are green and in flower, and designs can be light.
Ask the venue what will be in flower on your date: that is your starting point.
If you are coming from abroad
Many foreign couples choose June because the climate is easier to manage than in July and August. The same reasons make it extremely popular. If you are planning from a distance, secure your venue and florist early, and ask for a video call to see materials and samples. In Italy 2 June (Republic Day) is a public holiday, which can create a long weekend with busier roads and hotels.
What tends to cost less, and more, in June
| Tends to cost less | Tends to cost more |
|---|---|
| In-season Italian roses | Peonies at the end of the month, by then scarce |
| Lavender, chamomile, meadow flowers | Hydrangeas in large quantities with lots of spares |
| Mediterranean greenery | Saturdays in high season, late-night clearing |
| Venues with gardens already in bloom | Outdoor installations that need sun protection |
The cost of flowers depends on quantities and labour, not only on the month. Our guide to wedding flower costs explains the items that make up a quote.
Colour palettes for June

Questions to ask your florist
- Which flowers would you recommend to cope with the heat at my venue?
- Will there still be peonies on my date? What would you suggest instead?
- What time will you set up the outdoor arrangements?
- How many events do you have that day? Who will look after mine?
- Is clearing at the end of the night included? At what time?
Before and after June
If you are choosing your date, compare June with May, with peonies at their peak and cooler weather, and with July, when sunflowers and dahlias arrive along with the full summer heat.
Once you know your date and venue, ask for a quote and say whether the ceremony is outdoors and at what time: in June that is the information that matters most.
