In short
- July is the month of sunflowers, hydrangeas, lavender, agapanthus and the first dahlias.
- The full summer heat decides almost everything: timings, where flowers go, which varieties to choose.
- Mountains and lakes are the cool escape; the South and islands want sturdy flowers and greenery.
- Labour costs more on high-season weekends; Mediterranean greenery helps the budget.
In July Italian weddings move towards the evening. Couples marry at sunset, dine outdoors and dance under the stars. Flowers have to survive all this after a day that often goes above 30°C (86°F). If you are coming from a cooler country, expect the afternoon heat to be stronger than you imagine. The good news is that the market offers sturdy summer flowers and Mediterranean greenery that costs little and does a lot. This guide to July wedding flowers in Italy helps you choose the right ones.
The seasons given are indicative: the full picture is in our guide to seasonal flowers in Italy. Many couples coming from abroad choose July: you will find professionals used to working with them in our list of destination wedding florists in Italy.

Greenery and fruit in July
This is the greenery that handles summer best: olive, bay, pittosporum, myrtle, mastic (lentisk), rosemary, eucalyptus, fig. Peaches, apricots, plums, lemons and the first figs appear. Fruit on the table looks beautiful, but in the heat it attracts wasps and other insects: keep it away from guests' places and agree with the caterer what can sit near the food.
North, Centre and South in July
| Area | Typical weather | What works | Typical problems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountains and lakes | Moderate heat, afternoon storms | Cultivated meadow flowers, delphiniums, roses, lavender | Sudden storms, narrow access for vans |
| Northern plains and inland Centre | Muggy heat, warm nights | Sturdy flowers, lots of greenery, low arrangements | Humidity that tires flowers, mosquitoes in the evening |
| Coasts, South and islands | Dry heat, strong sun, wind | Agapanthus, olive, citrus, sunflowers, succulents | Wind on terraces, salt spray, island logistics |
On the islands and in places reachable only by sea, flowers travel by ferry or boat and can spend hours in transit: ask how they are protected. In Sardinia and on other exposed coasts the wind can be strong: low arrangements, heavy vases and no lightweight structures. On the lakes and in the mountains the climate is kinder, but afternoon storms are frequent.
Full summer heat: how to protect the flowers
In July heat is not a possibility, it is the starting point. The practical rules:
- timing: a late afternoon ceremony, outdoor arrangements set up as late as possible;
- shade: choose where the arch or the top table goes by checking where the sun falls at the right hour;
- water: containers with a water source, no dry arrangements in the sun;
- varieties: more sturdy flowers and greenery, fewer thin-petalled flowers;
- bouquet: kept cool until the last moment, with a spare if the ceremony is long.
Our guide to choosing flowers that cope with the heat goes deeper into varieties and techniques.
Plants to avoid or handle with care
July brings some beautiful Mediterranean plants to the table, and some need care:
- oleander: poisonous; never near food, drinks or children;
- bougainvillea: spectacular on the plant, not well suited as a cut flower;
- jasmine and tuberoses: intense scent, better at entrances than on the dining table.
If you are unsure what can go near the food, our guide to flowers near food helps you discuss it with the caterer and the florist.
Venues and guests from abroad in July
July venues
In July the choice of venue decides half of the flower work:
- in the mountains and on the lakes it is cooler and you can use more delicate flowers, keeping an eye on storms;
- at masserie and countryside villas in Tuscany, Umbria or Puglia the sun beats down until evening: you need shade, pergolas, trees;
- on terraces above the sea, such as on the Amalfi Coast, wind and salt burn thin petals: better tough greenery and substantial flowers;
- in air-conditioned indoor venues flowers do very well, but watch the move from outdoor heat to indoor cool, which makes water condense on the petals.
If you are coming from abroad
July is a month of many destination weddings. If you are planning from a distance, ask the florist for photos of summer weddings at the same venue: they show how the flowers really look at 6 pm, not just at 11 am. Ask too whether the florist has worked with international couples before and in which language you will communicate.
What tends to cost less, and more, in July
| Tends to cost less | Tends to cost more |
|---|---|
| Sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos | Hydrangeas and delicate flowers with lots of spares |
| Mediterranean greenery, olive, myrtle | Peonies and imported spring flowers |
| Low, sturdy arrangements | Logistics on islands and sea-access venues |
| Midweek dates | High-season Saturdays, late-night clearing |
We do not give figures: the cost depends on quantities, labour and logistics. In July transport and staff add a lot to the cost, especially far from the cities.
Colour palettes for July
- Yellow and olive green: sunflowers, olive, wheat, ceramics. Sunny and rustic.
- Mediterranean blue: agapanthus, blue hydrangeas, lemons, white. Perfect by the sea.
- Lavender and silver: lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, raw linen.
- White and green: lisianthus, calla lilies, tuberoses, plenty of foliage. Elegant and cool to the eye.
Questions to ask your florist
- Which flowers on my list will suffer in the heat? What would you replace them with?
- What time will you set up the ceremony and the outdoor tables?
- How do you transport flowers if the venue is on an island or reached by boat?
- Have you worked at this venue in summer? Where does the sun fall at 6 pm?
- Will the bouquet have a water source? Is there a spare?
Before and after July
If your date is still open, look at June, with roses at their peak and more manageable heat, and August, with dahlias and fruit but also Ferragosto and flower markets on holiday.
Once you have a date and a venue, ask for a quote and give the ceremony time and the position of the tables: in July that is the basis for choosing the right flowers.
