April wedding flowers in Italy: wisteria, lilac, first peonies

April wedding in Italy: wisteria, lilac, tulips, viburnum, orange blossom and first peonies, plus spring rain, Easter, holidays and what moves the quote.

By Flower Designer Italia editorial team ·

In short

  • April brings wisteria, lilac, viburnum, irises, tulips and, at the end of the month, the first peonies.
  • It is orange blossom month in the South: the flower behind the Italian bridal tradition.
  • Rain is frequent and evenings are cool: a plan B is still essential.
  • Easter and bank holidays fill diaries: book your florist and venue early.

April is the first month when an outdoor wedding stops being a gamble in much of Italy, though it is not yet a sure thing. Villa gardens are in full bloom, pergolas are covered in wisteria and the flower market offers the widest spring variety of the year. This guide to April wedding flowers in Italy helps you choose what to use, what to avoid and how to handle rain, holidays and long weekends.

Seasons are indicative, and our guide to seasonal flowers in Italy month by month gives you the full picture. To find a professional in your chosen region, go to our list of wedding florists.

What is in flower in April

  • Tulips: in every shape, including peony-flowered doubles.
  • Ranunculus: towards the end of their season, still lovely in the first half of the month.
  • Lilac: fragrant, white or lilac, to be handled with care because it dehydrates easily.
  • Wisteria: more beautiful on the plant than in a vase.
  • Snowball viburnum: acid green at first, then white. Excellent for volume and freshness.
  • Irises, freesias, late anemones, lily of the valley in some areas.
  • Cherry, apple and pear blossom, in white and pale pink.
  • The first peonies, at the end of the month and in limited quantities.

April flowers at a glance: availability, cost and colours

This table brings together the flowers and greenery you are most likely to find in April, in line with our seasonal flower calendar. Cost is relative to the other flowers of the same month and only indicative: it changes with the area, the supplier, quantities and the year. Greenery, fruit and orange blossom

April greenery is tender and pale: young beech and birch leaves, ferns, olive branches, jasmine in bud, ivy, pittosporum. This is when foliage gives a fresh effect you will no longer have in July.

In the South, especially in Sicily, Calabria and Campania, citrus trees flower. Zagara, the white blossom of orange and lemon trees, is the origin of the Italian tradition of "fiori d'arancio" (orange blossom), a symbol of marriage: in Italian, to talk about "orange blossoms" is to talk about a wedding. It is very fragrant and lasts little once cut: it is used in small sprigs, in the hair or in the bouquet, prepared at the last moment. For its meaning and uses read our guide to lemons, oranges and olive in wedding design.

South and islandsMild, often sunnyOrange blossom, wild flowers, first peoniesWind, first heat in the middle of the day

In April Tuscany and Umbria are at their greenest and the light is soft, ideal for photos. In the South, masserie and seaside villas start their season: an outdoor aperitivo is often possible, dinner is better under cover. On Lake Como and the other Lombard lakes historic gardens are in flower and become the decoration themselves: you often need fewer flowers than you think.

Rain and cool evenings

April is rainy in much of Italy. For your flowers that means two things. First, every outdoor set-up, from the arch to rows of flowers along the lawn, needs a covered alternative agreed with the venue in advance. Second, outdoor arrangements must withstand wind and water, with stable bases and flowers that do not mark with raindrops, as lilac and peonies do.

Evenings are cool: good for keeping flowers fresh, less so for guests. Think about blankets, outdoor heaters or an indoor room for after dinner, and coordinate it all with the florist and the caterer.

Easter, First Communions and long weekends

April is full of important dates in Italy:

  • Easter and Easter Monday (Pasquetta, a public holiday): the date changes every year. During Holy Week weddings are usually not celebrated; after Easter churches are often already decorated.
  • First Communions start between April and May. Parishes have busy calendars and florists work a lot on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • 25 April (Liberation Day) and 1 May (Labour Day): national holidays that create long weekends, popular for weddings with guests travelling in.

On public holidays some flower markets and wholesalers have reduced hours. Your florist will order in advance: your part is to fix the date and quantities early.

April for couples coming from abroad

April is the first month many foreign couples consider for a wedding in Italy. Bear in mind that Easter moves every year and that over those days historic cities such as Rome, Florence and Venice, lakes and coasts fill with Italian and international tourists. Hotels, restaurants and guest transport can cost more. For the florist it changes little, but for the overall planning it is worth checking the holiday calendar before you fix the date.

What tends to cost less, and more, in April

Tends to cost lessTends to cost more
In-season tulips, viburnum, irisesThe first peonies, still scarce on the market
Venues already in bloom that need few flowersWisteria and lilac in large quantities (delicate, spares needed)
Local blossom branchesOutdoor set-ups with a second set-up for plan B
Midweek datesEaster and bank holiday weekends

The final price depends on the design and the labour. To keep costs down without it showing, our guide on saving on wedding flowers has ideas that work particularly well in April.

Pollen and scent

April is also a month of pollen in the air. Cut flowers matter less than lawns and trees, but lilac, hyacinths and orange blossom have a strong scent that can be too much at the table. Use them at entrances and for the ceremony, and keep centrepieces more neutral. If any guests have allergies, tell your florist.

Colour palettes for April

  • White and acid green: viburnum, white tulips, ferns. Fresh and bright.
  • Lilac and wisteria: lilac, irises, grape hyacinths, with silver and linen.
  • Pink and peach: double tulips, ranunculus, apple blossom.
  • Citrus and white: orange blossom, glossy leaves, lemons, ceramics. Very suited to the South.

Questions to ask your florist

  • Will wisteria and lilac last until evening? Where would you put them?
  • Will there be peonies on my date, or should we plan an alternative?
  • If it rains, who moves the arrangements and how long does it take?
  • Does my date clash with First Communions or bank holidays? Does that change deliveries?
  • Does the venue already have gardens in bloom? Can we reduce the flowers accordingly?

Before and after April

If you are comparing dates, look at March, with ranunculus at their best and fewer bookings, and May, the month of peonies and many church weddings.

Have you fixed your date and venue? Ask for a quote and say whether you want wisteria, orange blossom or peonies, so the florist can tell you straight away whether they are realistic.

Frequently asked questions

Which flowers are in season for an April wedding in Italy?

Usually tulips, late ranunculus, lilac, wisteria, viburnum, irises, freesias, late anemones, cherry and apple blossom and, towards the end of the month in the South, the first peonies. Citrus trees flower in the South too. Exact dates change with the year and the area.

Can we have fresh wisteria at our wedding?

Wisteria is beautiful on venue pergolas, but once cut it lasts very little and wilts quickly. Many florists prefer to choose a venue where wisteria is already in flower, or use it only in small details. Ask for a test if it matters to you.

Are peonies available for an April wedding in Italy?

The first ones appear at the end of April, mostly from southern Italy and Liguria or from imports, but May is the easiest month in Italy. If you marry in the first half of April, consider double ranunculus or garden roses instead.

Is April a good month for a destination wedding in Italy?

It is the first month many foreign couples consider. Gardens are in full bloom and the light is soft, but rain is frequent and evenings are cool. Easter and the 25 April and 1 May holidays fill hotels and venues, so check the calendar before fixing your date.
