Glossary term

Bomboniera (wedding favour)

A small gift for guests, almost always with five sugared almonds; in floral versions it is a plant or dried flowers.

A bomboniera (plural bomboniere) is the keepsake that the couple, or the parents of a baby at a christening, give to guests. In Italian tradition it holds an odd number of sugared almonds (confetti), often five. Today many couples choose plant-based favours: small plants, bulbs, seeds, bunches of lavender or dried flowers.

If the favour is a flower or a plant, it makes sense to give it to your flower designer or coordinate it with them, so the style stays consistent. Plants need to survive a few days in a car or a suitcase, especially at a destination wedding. The guide on flowers and Italian wedding traditions explains the customs; those on christening flowers and on First Communion and Confirmation show versions for children's celebrations.

What to ask: how many you need, when they are delivered, and whether guests from abroad will be able to take them home.
