Glossary term

Cold chain

Keeping flowers cool from grower to event: cold rooms, refrigerated vans, deliveries in the cooler hours.

The cold chain is the sequence of steps in which cut flowers stay at a low temperature: from grower to market, from market to workshop, from workshop to venue. If it breaks, for example in a van left in the sun, the flowers open too early or wilt.

It matters most with imported flowers, which travel longer, at August weddings and at large events with many arrangements prepared in advance. The guide on flowers for large events covers logistics and cold rooms; the one on the summer wedding covers delivery times; the one on where flowers come from describes the Italian supply chain and imports.

What to ask: where the flowers are kept in the days before, how they travel, and whether the venue has a cool room to store them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the cold chain matter even for a small wedding?

Because a few hours in the heat are enough to make flowers open or wilt. Ask where they will be kept between delivery and the ceremony.
