Local flowers are grown close to where they are used, or at least in Italy, and arrive without long flights. Italy has a significant flower-growing industry, with districts in Liguria, Tuscany, Campania, Puglia and Sicily, and small growers who sell directly to florists.
People who choose them want freshness, less transport and flowers that follow the seasons. It does not mean giving up everything else: roses and other imported flowers are still useful in certain months. The guide on where the flowers come from explains the Italian supply chain and imports; the one on sustainable floral design puts them at the centre; the one on saving money on wedding flowers shows how they can help the budget.
What to ask: how much of the flowers are grown in Italy, whether the florist works with local growers, what comes from abroad and why.
