Colour palette

The 3 to 5 colours chosen for the flowers and styling, which guide bouquets, tables, fabrics and stationery.

The colour palette is the range of colours for your wedding: usually one main colour, one or two supporting colours, a neutral and green. It helps you choose the flowers, but also tablecloths, ribbons, invitations and bridesmaids' dresses. A short palette brings order; one that is too long makes everything look muddled.

Flower colours change with the light: the same pink looks different in midday sun and by candlelight. And not every colour exists in every season, so ask your florist what is flowering on your date. The guide to choosing a colour palette for your flowers explains how to build one; the one on the moodboard sets it next to your images; the one on flowers and photography explains how colours come out in photos.

What to ask: which seasonal flowers fit the palette, how the colour will change in the light of your venue.

Frequently asked questions

How many colours should a wedding palette have?

Usually 3 to 5, including a neutral and green. With more colours, it helps to give just one the leading role.
