In short
- October offers the last dahlias, autumn roses, dried hydrangeas and plenty of coloured foliage.
- Berries, pomegranates, persimmons, olives and leaves make designs warm and textured.
- Be careful with chrysanthemums: in Italy they are linked to mourning and to 2 November.
- Days get shorter and the clocks go back: plan light and timings accordingly.
October is the month when autumn really shows, especially in the hills of central and northern Italy. Vineyards change colour, woods turn red and yellow, and sunny days have a low, warm light. For October wedding flowers that means deeper palettes, natural materials and less competition than in September. This guide tells you what is available, what to avoid and how the month differs between North and South.
Seasons are indicative: the full picture is in our guide to seasonal flowers in Italy month by month. October is the month of the wine hills and truffles: if you are looking at those areas, our list of wedding florists in Piedmont and the Langhe is a good place to start.
What is in flower in October
- Dahlias: the last ones, until the first cold snap. In the North the season can end with the first frost.
- Roses: autumn flowering, in warm tones and with firmer petals.
- Hydrangeas: drying on the plant in shades of green, red and bronze. Beautiful, and long-lasting.
- Asters and Japanese anemones: light, good for natural arrangements.
- Amaranthus and celosia: still around, in darker tones.
- Lisianthus, calla lilies, carnations: sturdy and available.
- Dried grasses: miscanthus and pennisetum, golden and airy.

Greenery, berries and fruit in October
This is the month when greenery stops being green:
- Virginia creeper, maple, oak and beech leaves, in reds and yellows;
- berries of hypericum, dog rose, hawthorn, pyracantha;
- ripe pomegranates, persimmons, quinces;
- olives on olive branches, close to harvest in many areas;
- chestnut husks and chestnuts, decorative but prickly: better kept away from guests' hands.
Some berries are toxic: they must not go near food or within reach of children. Ask your florist which ones they use and where.
North, Centre and South in October
| Area | Typical weather | What works | Typical problems |
|---|---|---|---|
| North, Langhe, lakes | Cool, morning mist, rain | Coloured leaves, dried hydrangeas, last dahlias | First frosts, early darkness, fog on the roads |
| Centre | Mild, clear days alternating with heavy rain | Olive with olives, vine, pomegranates, autumn roses | Sudden heavy rain, wet ground |
| South and islands | Still warm, warm sea | Pomegranates, persimmons, young citrus, late summer flowers | Intense storms, wind |
In the North, October is the month of the wine hills and truffles in Piedmont. Venues are beautiful but can be full of visitors at weekends, and hill roads get busy. In the Centre, it is olive harvest time in many areas, with olive mills open and the countryside busy. In the South and on the islands, October is often still a kind of half-summer: a seaside wedding is possible, with a plan B for storms, which can be violent.
The chrysanthemum question
If you are coming from abroad this may seem strange, but in Italy the chrysanthemum is the flower of the dead. Italians take them to cemeteries above all for All Souls' Day on 2 November, and at the end of October the markets are full of them. For many Italian guests, chrysanthemums at a wedding send the wrong signal.
Some florists use modern varieties, small or pompom-shaped, that do not look like the classic chrysanthemum. It is a possible choice, but make it knowing how it may be read. If most guests are Italian or there are older relatives, it is simpler to choose dahlias or asters, which give a similar effect. For other meanings attached to flowers in Italy, see our guide to flowers and Italian wedding traditions.
Light, the clock change and how flowers hold up
At the end of October Italy switches back to standard time and darkness comes an hour earlier. A 4 pm ceremony may end in poor light: bring the times forward or plan the lighting. The dark colours of the month, like burgundy and plum, need balancing with pale tones and warm light, otherwise they disappear in photos.
October weather suits flowers: the cool helps them last. The risks are rain on outdoor arrangements and, in the North, the first frost on field-grown dahlias, which can end the season overnight. Dried hydrangeas and grasses, by contrast, are almost indestructible. If you like that look, read our guide to dried and preserved flowers.
October for couples coming from abroad
For couples arriving from outside Italy, October is a very interesting month: colourful hills, food and wine at their best, and hotel and flight prices generally lower than in summer. Two things to know: some seaside venues close at the start of the month, and the days shorten quickly. If you dream of a sunset in your photos, ask the venue what time the sun sets on your date and set the ceremony time accordingly.
What tends to cost less, and more, in October
| Tends to cost less | Tends to cost more |
|---|---|
| Leaves, berries, branches, olives | Dahlias at the end of the month, if the season is over |
| Dried hydrangeas, grasses | Imported peonies and spring flowers |
| Pomegranates, persimmons, local fruit | Hill venues on the busiest tourist weekends |
| End-of-month dates, less in demand | Extra lighting for the dark hours |
We do not give figures: they depend on the design, quantities and labour. October is often a good compromise between September's wealth of flowers and the calm of low season.
Colour palettes for October
- Rust and gold: orange dahlias, oak leaves, grasses, brass.
- Burgundy and plum: dark roses, amaranthus, pomegranates, velvet. Balance with warm light.
- Sage green and cream: olive with olives, green hydrangeas, cream roses. Restrained and elegant.
- Woodland: leaves, chestnut husks, berries, moss, candles where allowed. Suited to castles and farmhouses.
Questions to ask your florist
- Will there still be dahlias on my date? What will you use if the season ends early?
- Do you use chrysanthemums? How do you think Italian guests will read them?
- Are the berries you put on the tables safe near food?
- If it rains, which outdoor arrangements will be moved, and where?
- With the clock change, what light will we have at ceremony time?
Before and after October
Compare October with September, with dahlias at their peak and more weddings, and with November, the quietest month of autumn.
Once you have a date and a venue, ask for a quote and mention if you have guests from abroad: it helps the florist explain Italian flower customs and meanings.
