In short
- September is the month of dahlias, with roses, antique-toned hydrangeas, cosmos and plenty of warm colours.
- Grapes, figs, pomegranates and berries come into the designs: it is grape harvest season.
- The weather is often gentle, but heat early in the month and storms later on need planning for.
- It is high season: to save, rely on plentiful flowers, greenery and midweek days.
September is one of the most popular months for a wedding in Italy, and with good reason. Temperatures soften, the light turns golden, the countryside is in the middle of the grape harvest and the market offers a huge variety of flowers and fruit. It is also a very popular month, so it pays to arrive prepared. This guide to September wedding flowers in Italy tells you what you will find, how it changes from North to South and how to keep costs in check.
Flower seasons are indicative: the year and the area shift them. The full calendar is in our guide to seasonal flowers in Italy month by month. If you are already looking for a professional, browse the wedding florists in your chosen region.

- Dahlias: this is their best month. Pompom, cactus, and "Café au Lait" blooms as big as a plate.
- Roses: the second flush of garden roses, in warmer colours.
- Hydrangeas: turning greens, burgundies and antique pinks. Tougher than the summer ones.
- Cosmos, zinnias, asters, rudbeckias: for a natural, garden-picked look.
- Amaranthus and celosia: texture and trailing volume.
- Lisianthus, lilies, calla lilies: elegant and sturdy.
- Ornamental grasses: miscanthus, pennisetum and wheat, light and glowing at sunset.

Greenery, fruit and the grape harvest
September is the month when fruit truly enters wedding design:
- grapes in bunches and vine leaves, which start to change colour;
- figs and fig branches;
- pomegranates, still small at the start of the month, more colourful towards the end;
- berries of dog rose, hypericum, hawthorn;
- olive branches with the olives still green.
In the Langhe (Piedmont), Chianti (Tuscany), Franciacorta (Lombardy) and many other wine regions, marrying during the harvest means vineyards heavy with grapes and wineries in full swing. It is beautiful, but wine estates are busy: ask your venue how it organises itself on those days. Remember that any fruit near the food has to be agreed with the caterer.
North, Centre and South in September
| Area | Typical weather | What works | Typical problems |
|---|---|---|---|
| North, lakes, vineyards | Mild, cool evenings by the end of the month, storms | Dahlias, roses, grapes, antique hydrangeas | Sudden rain, earlier darkness |
| Centre | Hot early in the month, golden light | Dahlias, olive, vine, cultivated meadow flowers | Very busy venues, late-summer storms |
| South and islands | Still summer, warm sea | Figs, pomegranates, late agapanthus, celosia | Midday heat, wind, the last tourist crowds |
In the South and on the islands, September is often the ideal month for a seaside wedding: the water is warm and the August crowds have gone. Puglia, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast are especially popular. In the North the second half of the month brings cool evenings and the first autumn rain: on Lake Como or Lake Garda, bring outdoor ceremonies forward and have the plan B ready.
How flowers hold up in September
Dahlias are the flower of the month, but they are not indestructible: they do well in water and in the cool, and they suffer in full sun and when transported dry. Late-season hydrangeas, on the other hand, are sturdier than June's. Grasses and wheat have no problems at all. The main risk is contrast: a still-hot afternoon followed by a cool, damp evening. Ask where the arrangements will stay during the hottest hours and how they will be protected if a storm arrives.
September for couples coming from abroad
September is a favourite with couples marrying in Italy from abroad: the sea is still warm, the hills are in harvest, and cities are less crowded than in high summer. That makes it extremely popular. If you are planning from a distance, secure your venue and florist well in advance and ask for an online meeting to see colour samples and materials. Remember that at some venues fresh fruit such as grapes on the tables also has to be agreed with the waiting staff.
What tends to cost less, and more, in September
September is in demand, but it is also a month when the market is full of seasonal flowers. There is room to save.
| Tends to cost less | Tends to cost more |
|---|---|
| Dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, asters | Peonies and imported spring flowers |
| Greenery, vine, olive, grasses | September Saturdays in the most popular areas |
| Local fruit such as grapes and pomegranates | Vineyard venues during harvest days |
| Fridays and Sundays | Hanging installations and very full arches |
If you want budget-friendly September wedding flowers, the choices that matter most are: rely on what is plentiful, use greenery as the base, reuse the ceremony arrangements and reduce the number of pieces. Our guide on saving on wedding flowers has more practical ideas.
September church weddings
Many couples choose a church wedding in September. After the summer break, Italian parishes return to busy Saturday calendars. The usual rules apply: access times, what can be placed or fixed, whether flowers are shared with another service. Seasonal dahlias and roses are perfect for arrangements beside the altar and along the aisle, but check with the parish priest. You will find professionals used to working in churches in our list of florists for church wedding flowers.
Colour palettes for September
- Terracotta and peach: "Café au Lait" dahlias, peach roses, grasses. The September classic.
- Burgundy and grape: dark dahlias, amaranthus, bunches of grapes, vine leaves.
- White and sage green: greenish-white hydrangeas, olive, eucalyptus. Restrained and elegant.
- Late-summer meadow: cosmos, asters, rudbeckias, wheat. Natural, suited to farmhouses and masserie.
Questions to ask your florist
- Which dahlias can you source in my week? Are they grown in Italy?
- Can we use grapes and pomegranates on the tables? What does the caterer think?
- If it is still hot, where will you keep the arrangements before the guests arrive?
- How many weddings do you have on my weekend?
- What would you suggest for a lush look without pushing the budget too far?
Before and after September
If your date is still open, compare September with August, hotter and with Ferragosto to manage, and with October, more autumnal, with coloured leaves and fewer bookings.
Once you have a date and a venue, ask for a quote: in September the most sought-after florists need to be booked well in advance.
