Glossary term

Top table (sweetheart table)

The table where the couple sits, alone or with witnesses and families: the most photographed spot at the reception.

The top table can be a small table for two (a sweetheart table, in US usage), a head table with witnesses and parents, or a central stretch of the banquet table. It usually gets a fuller front arrangement that spills over the edge, or a backdrop behind.

Plan it for the photos: flowers that do not hide faces, good light, a clean background. Pieces from the ceremony often end up here, such as the floral arch or the altar arrangements, through reusing the flowers. The guide to the top table covers shapes and sizes; the one on table layout places it in the room; the one on the floral arch shows how to move it behind the couple.

What to ask: the height of the front arrangement, whether the backdrop is reused from the ceremony, and how it will be lit in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Should the top table have more flowers than the others?

Usually yes, because it is at the centre of the photos. You do not need to double the budget, though: reusing the ceremony flowers is often enough.
