In short
- In Sicily you can marry among baroque churches, palazzi, villas, bagli (farm courtyards) and islands.
- Heat and scirocco wind decide timings and flower choice, especially in summer.
- Citrus, orange blossom and strong colours feel at home here, but your style stays your own.
- On the smaller islands everything travels by sea: time and cost must be planned.
A Sicily wedding draws Italian and international couples with a rare variety: the ancient theatre of Taormina above the sea, the baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa, the palazzi of Palermo, country bagli, the Aeolian and Egadi islands. Each area calls for a different approach to flowers. This guide helps you understand what matters and what to ask. To see who works on the island, open the list of floral designers in Sicily.
Areas and Sicily wedding venues
| Area | Typical venues | What affects the flowers |
|---|---|---|
| Taormina and the Ionian coast | Clifftop hotels and villas, terraces | Uphill access, wind, seasonal traffic |
| Val di Noto (Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Syracuse) | Baroque churches, palazzi, farmhouses | Grand stairways, church rules, heat in town centres |
| Palermo | Noble palazzi, churches, villas | Traffic, access to the historic centre |
| Countryside | Bagli, estates, citrus groves, vineyards | Distances, full sun |
| Islands (Aeolians, Egadi, Pantelleria) | Villas, terraces, beaches | Transport by sea, few resources on site |
Sicilian baroque is already highly decorated. With such rich facades and altars, set-ups that accompany rather than compete often work best: a few large arrangements, chosen colours, greenery.
Seasons
These notes are general and vary by area and year.
| Period | Climate | What you often find |
|---|---|---|
| April-May | Mild, lots in bloom | Roses, wildflowers, citrus blossom (zagara) in spring |
| June | Hot, long evenings | Roses, Mediterranean greenery, bougainvillea |
| July-August | Very hot, scirocco possible | Sturdy flowers, succulents, greenery, potted citrus |
| September-October | Heat easing, golden light | Dahlias, roses, pomegranates, prickly pears, fruiting branches |
Zagara, the blossom of citrus trees, is much loved for its scent. Flowering depends on the species and area and does not last all year. Ask your florist whether it will be available on your date.
Heat and scirocco
In a Sicilian summer, heat is the first enemy of cut flowers. The scirocco, a hot wind from the south-east, can make things worse within hours. To protect the set-up:
- hold ceremonies in late afternoon, where possible;
- use sturdy flowers outdoors and keep delicate ones in the shade or indoors;
- choose arrangements with a water source;
- install as close to the ceremony time as possible;
- find cool spaces to store the flowers.

Citrus, colour and the Mediterranean
Lemons, oranges, mandarins, fruiting branches, majolica, ceramics, strong colours: many Sicilian set-ups play with these. But there are also all-white weddings, elegant and restrained, in the palazzi of Palermo as well as in Taormina.
If you like citrus, remember that real fruit on the table must be agreed with the caterer, and potted trees are heavy. Read lemons, oranges and olive in wedding design and Mediterranean style.
Baroque churches and their rules
The churches of Noto, Modica, Ragusa and Palermo are often in high demand. Each parish has its own rules: set-up times, no fixing arrangements to columns and altars, limits on petals and candles, sometimes several weddings on the same day. The great stairways are spectacular, but they are also public spaces: decorating them needs agreements.
Always ask the parish for its rules and, for public spaces, the Comune (the town council). Read church wedding flowers.
The smaller islands
Marrying on the Aeolian islands, the Egadi or Pantelleria is a different experience. For flowers it means:
- everything arrives from Sicily or the mainland by ferry or hydrofoil;
- a rough sea can delay or cancel crossings;
- there are few suppliers and little equipment on site;
- the florist's team often stays overnight on the island.
Ask for a transport plan, a time margin and what happens if a crossing is cancelled. Travel costs must be written into the quote. See the flower budget for a destination wedding.
Large weddings
In many Sicilian families a wedding is a celebration with lots of guests. More tables mean more centrepieces, more hire items, more set-up. Before asking for a quote, fix a realistic guest count and table layout. For ideas, read wedding centrepieces. With many tables, one simple arrangement repeated well often looks better than lots of different ones, and keeps the budget under control without taking colour out of the room.
Bagli and country receptions
A baglio is a historic farm complex built around a large inner courtyard, typical of western Sicily. Today many bagli and estates host weddings. The enclosed courtyard shelters you from the wind and feels intimate, but in summer it holds the day's heat. For flowers the same care applies as at southern masserie: large spaces filled with a few strong scenes, evening lighting to plan, sturdy flowers for the hot hours.
On estates with citrus groves or vineyards, the landscape already brings a lot of colour. The property's trees are not touched without permission, but with lights and long tables they can become the setting for dinner.
Where to focus the budget
Every wedding is different, but some choices come up often in Sicily:
| Choice | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Church with a few large arrangements | Baroque churches already rich in decoration |
| Reusing ceremony flowers at dinner | Ceremony and reception close together |
| Mediterranean greenery and citrus instead of many flowers | Long tables, many guests |
| A well-made bouquet and quality personal flowers | Always: they are in the closest photos |
These are pointers, not rules. The items that push the bill up, such as travel, hire items and set-up hours, are explained in how to read a floral designer's quote.
If you are coming from abroad
Some Sicilian wedding customs may be new to you. The party often lasts many hours and dinner starts late, so table flowers must last until the small hours. The confettata, a table of confetti (sugared almonds), and bomboniere, small gifts for guests, are almost always there and can have a small matching floral display. Chrysanthemums, as elsewhere in Italy, are linked to mourning and avoided. A local florist knows these customs and can help you decide which to follow. Read flowers and traditions of the Italian wedding.
After the party
With parties ending in the small hours, breakdown often happens the next morning. Ask whether the venue allows it and whether there are other events the following day. On the islands, materials leave on the first available crossing, and this must be planned too. If you want to give flowers to guests, organise it beforehand. Read what to do with your flowers after the wedding.
Questions to ask your floral designer
- Have you worked at this church or venue before? Do you know the rules?
- Which flowers do you suggest for our date, given the heat?
- What do you do on scirocco days?
- For the islands: how do you transport the flowers, when do you leave, and what happens if the sea is rough?
- Which materials are Sicilian or Italian?
- Does the quote include travel, overnight stays, set-up, hire items and VAT (IVA)?
- Who clears up, and at what time?
Final thoughts
Sicily offers very different settings, and each needs a florist who knows the place and the climate. If you are comparing other southern destinations, read the guides to Puglia and the Amalfi Coast. If you are coming from abroad, flowers and traditions of the Italian wedding is also worth a read.
