Amalfi Coast wedding: venues, logistics, costs and flowers

Planning an Amalfi Coast wedding: Ravello, Positano and Amalfi venues, getting there, seasons, indicative costs, then flowers, lemons and florist questions.

By Flower Designer Italia editorial team ·

In short

  • On the Amalfi Coast the challenge is logistics: steps, narrow roads, traffic and sometimes deliveries by sea.
  • Venues are terraces, hotels, villas and churches overlooking the sea, often with little time to set up.
  • It is one of the most expensive areas to marry in Italy: logistics weigh on every supplier's quote.
  • Lemons and Mediterranean greenery are part of the landscape, but your style stays your own.
  • Choose a floral designer who knows the access routes and rules of your venue.

Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano, Sorrento: an Amalfi Coast wedding is high on the list for couples marrying in Italy from abroad. The view does half the work. For the flowers, the other half is organisation. This guide starts with the place: the venues, how to get there, when to go and what it costs. Then it moves on to the flowers and what to ask your florist. To see who works in the area, open the list of floral designers on the Amalfi Coast.

Typical Amalfi Coast wedding venues

VenueWhat it offersWhat affects the flowers
Hotel terraceSea views, in-house serviceTight time slots, other guests, wind
Historic villa (for example in Ravello)Gardens, viewpoints, hallsHeritage rules, long walks from the road
Seaside or village churchStairways, churchyards, majolica tilesParish rules, other services
Terrace restaurantTables above the viewLimited space, little time to set up
Beach or boatSmall ceremonies, elopementsPermits, sand, wind, salt air

Many venues have steps and footpaths between the point where the van stops and the event space. Every vase, every structure and every bucket of water has to be carried by hand.

Ravello, Positano, Amalfi: practical differences

  • Ravello sits high up, with historic villas and gardens. Some venues involve long walks, heritage rules apply, and the light over the gulf is wide and open.
  • Positano is vertical: steps everywhere, few vehicle access points, narrow spaces.
  • Amalfi has the cathedral square and its grand stairway, which are very busy: parish rules and rules for public spaces need checking well in advance.

These are general notes. Every venue has its own conditions, and a site visit is when you find them out. Read the venue site visit with your florist.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast

Most guests fly into Naples, then continue by road along the Sorrento peninsula or via Salerno. The coast road is beautiful but slow, and in high season the drive can take much longer than the distance suggests. Trains reach Naples, Salerno and Sorrento; from there buses, private transfers and, in season, ferries connect the towns along the coast.

A few practical points for you and your guests:

  • hire private transfers or shuttles rather than cars: parking is scarce and expensive;
  • in season, ferries between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano can be quicker than the road, weather permitting;
  • choose a base town close to the venue, so guests are not on the road every day;
  • Ravello sits high above Amalfi and is reached only by road, with a steep, winding climb.

Traffic on the coast road can be regulated in peak periods, and rules can change: check with your venue and the Comuni.

Logistics: steps, roads and the sea

This is what makes the difference. A florist used to the coast plans for things that do not matter elsewhere:

  • the coast road: narrow, busy in season, sometimes with traffic restrictions;
  • parking: scarce and far away, often needing a small vehicle or several trips;
  • steps: in towns like Positano many spaces can only be reached on foot;
  • the sea: for some venues, or to avoid traffic, materials may arrive by boat;
  • people: more hands are needed to carry and install.

All of this turns into working hours. Ask for transport, porterage and installation to be separate lines in the quote, so you can compare offers. See extra costs in a floral set-up.

Traffic and access rules can change: always check with your venue and, where needed, with the Comune (the local town council).

Seasons

PeriodWhat to expect
April-MayMild weather, first blooms, fewer crowds
JuneLong light, in high demand
July-AugustHeat, very busy towns and roads
September-OctoberSea still warm, softer light

In summer, sun-exposed terraces get very hot. Ceremonies move towards the evening and delicate flowers need protecting. Read more in flowers that cope with the heat.

What an Amalfi Coast wedding costs

The Amalfi Coast sits at the top end of the Italian wedding market, together with Lake Como, Capri and Venice. Hotels and villas with sea views are in high demand from May to October, set-up windows are short, and every supplier has to plan for steps, narrow roads and sometimes boats. For a breakdown by item, with sample budgets for 30, 80 and 150 guests and the differences between destinations, read how much a wedding in Italy costs.

Flowers

There is no Amalfi Coast price list for flowers. As a starting point, our guide to how much wedding flowers cost in Italy gives indicative national ranges: roughly €1,800 to €4,000 for 60 guests with a civil or symbolic ceremony at a villa, and €3,500 to €8,000 for 120 guests with a church ceremony and a villa reception. They are orientation figures, not quotes. On the coast, as in other destination hotspots, quotes usually fall in the upper part of these ranges.

Items that often come on top here:

  • porterage: carrying vases, structures and water up and down steps by hand;
  • extra staff to install quickly when the venue gives only a few hours;
  • transport by sea, for some venues or to avoid traffic;
  • travel and overnight stays if the team comes from Naples, Salerno or further away;
  • night-time breakdown straight after the party.

Ask for each of these as a separate line in the quote.

When to book and the site visit

The best-known venues on the coast book far ahead, often a year or more for Saturdays in June and September. Choose your florist straight after, because in peak periods they work on several weddings in the same week and must organise vehicles and staff. If you are coming from abroad and cannot visit in person, ask your florist and your planner to do the site visit together, with photos and measurements. On timings, read how far ahead to book your floral designer.

Capri and the islands

If you are thinking of Capri, the logistics change again: ferries, small vehicles on the island, local rules. You will find it all in the guide to a wedding on Capri.

Small ceremonies, beaches and boats

The Amalfi Coast is a popular choice for elopements and small weddings. A symbolic ceremony on a terrace, on the rocks or on a boat needs few flowers, but well thought out: a bouquet, a buttonhole, a small backdrop that can handle the wind.

Beaches and spaces on state-owned coastline (demanio marittimo) are not free venues. You usually need permits and agreements with the Comune or whoever manages the space, and there are often limits on structures, times and cleaning. The same goes for petals: in many public places they are not welcome. Always check first. For small ceremony ideas, read eloping in Italy and flowers for a symbolic ceremony.

Lemons, majolica and colour

The coast has a natural palette: lemon yellow, sea blue, white houses, green terraced gardens and the colours of majolica tiles. Many set-ups pick this up with lemons and leaves, potted citrus, white flowers and greenery.

You do not have to follow it. An all-white set-up, a romantic one in pink or a modern one all work well against the sea. If you love citrus, read lemons, oranges and olive in wedding design.

A practical note: real lemons are heavy, and on a windy terrace a tall, heavy arrangement must be well secured.

Where to invest

On the coast the view already fills the frame. That is why many couples focus the budget on a few strong points instead of filling every corner:

SpotWhy it matters
Bouquet and personal flowersIn every photo, including close-ups
Ceremony backdropFrames the sea, but must cope with the wind
Couple's tableThe centre of the dinner photos
Guest tablesSimpler, repeated pieces that do not block the view

This is an approach, not a rule. Talk it through with your florist based on the actual space.

Tight timings at venues

Hotels and restaurants on the coast often host other guests and events. Set-up windows can be just a few hours, and breakdown has to happen right after the party or early next morning. Ask the venue:

  • from what time the florist can come in;
  • where flowers can be prepared and kept cool;
  • by what time the space must be cleared;
  • whether there are other ceremonies at the same church or terrace.

To plan installation and clearing, read set-up and breakdown.

After the party

Breakdown on the coast is as hard as set-up: the same steps, the same paths, often at night. Ask whether it is included in the quote, at what time it happens and what happens to the flowers. If you want to give them to guests or leave them at the hotel, organise it in advance. Read what to do with your flowers after the wedding.

Questions to ask your floral designer

  • Have you worked at this venue? Where do you unload and how far is the walk?
  • Is transport by road or by sea? What does it cost?
  • How many people do you need for set-up?
  • How many hours do you need if the venue gives us little time?
  • How do you secure arrangements on windy terraces?
  • Do you use lemons and local greenery? Where do they come from?
  • Who clears up and when, if the space must be freed straight away?

Final thoughts

On the Amalfi Coast a good floral set-up starts with a good logistics plan. The right florist is one who knows the roads, steps and timings of the venues, as well as the flowers. Frequently asked questions

Why do wedding flowers cost more on the Amalfi Coast?

Often it is not the flowers that cost more but the logistics: narrow, busy roads, scarce parking, steps to climb by hand and sometimes transport by sea. More hours and more people push the quote up. Ask for these items to be listed separately.

Can we use real lemons in our wedding decor?

Yes, lemons with leaves, branches and potted lemon trees are widely used here. Agree them with the venue and, if they go on the tables, with the caterer. Lemons are heavy, so tall arrangements must be stable.

Can the florist set up the day before on the Amalfi Coast?

It depends on the venue. Many hotels and villas have other guests and events and allow only a few hours. Ask for exact access times and whether there is a cool space to keep the flowers before set-up.

Are there traffic restrictions on the Amalfi Coast road?

In peak periods traffic on the coast road can be regulated with restrictions, and parking is limited. Rules can change, so check with the local Comuni and your venue, and leave transport to people who know the area.
