In short
- On Lake Garda couples marry in villas, lemon houses, castles and hotels overlooking the lake.
- In the north the wind is a constant: structures and candles must be secured.
- The mild climate supports olives, lemons and Mediterranean greenery, unusual for northern Italy.
- The lake touches three regions: distances and traffic complicate logistics.
Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake, and a Lake Garda wedding appeals to Italian and international couples alike. Sirmione with its castle and spa, Salò and Gardone on the Brescia shore, Malcesine and Garda on the Verona shore, Riva and Arco in the north. This guide explains how flowers change on the lake and what to ask. To see who works in the area, open the list of floral designers on Lake Garda.
Typical Lake Garda wedding venues
| Venue | What it offers | What affects the flowers |
|---|---|---|
| Historic villa | Gardens, terraces, boathouses | Heritage rules, timings, approved suppliers |
| Lemon house (limonaia) | Stone pillars, pergolas, citrus | Narrow spaces, heritage limits, delicate surfaces |
| Castle or historic building | Courtyards, towers, walls | Rules set by the Comune or owners, access |
| Lakeside hotel | Terraces and full service | Other guests, short timings |
| Winery or agriturismo inland | Vineyards, moraine hills | Distances, full sun |
Some lakeside Comuni (town councils) hold civil weddings in historic buildings, such as castles and palazzi. The rules on decoration are set by the Comune: check with the office that manages ceremonies. Read flowers for a civil wedding at the town hall.
Lemon houses and the mild climate
Garda has a milder climate than you might expect in the north. Olive trees grow here, and for centuries lemons were grown in limonaie, stone and timber structures on the western shore. This landscape offers materials and ideas: olive branches, potted citrus, Mediterranean greenery, aromatic herbs.
But the style is still yours. On Garda you see romantic set-ups with roses and hydrangeas, classic ones in the villas, rustic ones at the wineries. If you like citrus, read lemons, oranges and olive in wedding design.
Historic lemon houses are protected heritage. If your venue has one, ask what can be placed, hung or lit.
The wind
Wind is a feature of Garda, especially in the north, where the lake is squeezed between mountains. Some winds blow regularly at certain times of day, and summer storms arrive quickly.
For your set-up this means:
- arches and structures weighted or fixed;
- tall arrangements on heavy bases;
- candles in closed holders, if the venue allows them;
- petals and paper that blow away;
- an indoor plan B ready to go.
Ask your florist which times of day are calmer in your area. Read floral arches and ceremony design and your rain plan.
Sirmione, Malcesine and the historic centres
The lake towns are beautiful and very busy. For suppliers there are limits:
- Sirmione has a historic centre on a narrow peninsula, with restricted vehicle access;
- Malcesine and other villages have narrow streets and little parking;
- in peak months traffic on the lakeside roads stretches timings.
Ask your florist how they handle access and permits in your town and whether anything needs to go by boat. Check the rules with the Comune.
Seasons
| Period | What to expect | Flowers and greenery often available |
|---|---|---|
| April-May | Mild weather, gardens in bloom | Ranunculus, roses, peonies towards May, fresh greenery |
| June | In high demand, long days | Garden roses, hydrangeas, herbs |
| July-August | Heat, many visitors, storms | Hardy flowers, Mediterranean greenery |
| September-October | Grape harvest inland, warm light | Dahlias, roses, vine leaves, berries |

Three regions, one lake
Garda is split between Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino. For you this means florists may come from Brescia, Verona, Trento or other cities, and road distances between shores are long. A ceremony on the Brescia shore and a reception on the Verona shore take time to move flowers between.
Ask where the team is based, what travel costs and whether ceremony flowers can be reused at the reception. The overall cost of a Lake Garda wedding moves a lot with these items: see how to read a floral designer's quote.
What a Lake Garda wedding costs in flowers
There is no single price for Lake Garda. As a starting point, our guide to how much wedding flowers cost in Italy gives indicative ranges for the whole country: roughly €1,800 to €4,000 for 60 guests with a civil or symbolic ceremony at a villa, and €3,500 to €8,000 for 120 guests with a church ceremony and a villa reception. They are orientation figures, not quotes.
On Garda, the items that most often move the total are:
- travel between shores and regions, and sometimes an overnight stay for the team;
- access to historic centres such as Sirmione, with restricted traffic zones and time slots;
- wind-proofing: heavier bases, fixings and extra structures for outdoor pieces;
- heritage venues such as lemon houses, where set-up takes longer and needs more care;
- moving flowers from a ceremony on one shore to a reception on another.
Ask for these items as separate lines in the quote, so you can compare like with like.
Inland, vineyards and hills
Not every Garda wedding is on the water. Behind the lake lie hills with vineyards and olive groves, wineries and agriturismi (farm stays). Here space is generous and the country light is soft, but the usual rural points apply:
- full sun on lawns and in vineyards in summer;
- distances from the lake and from the towns where guests stay;
- uneven ground for arches and structures;
- the grape harvest in September, with work going on at the wineries.
Ask the venue what will be happening on your date and pass it on to your florist. For country style, read wildflowers at your wedding.
Boats and transfers on the lake
The lake offers boat transfers between shores and towns. To arrive at the ceremony or for an aperitivo on the water, some couples decorate the boat with small floral details. The usual rules apply: light, fixed arrangements, no loose water, nothing in the skipper's way, the owner's permission. With the northern wind, everything must be even more stable.
Planning from abroad
Garda is very popular with German, Dutch and English-speaking visitors, and many local florists are used to working in several languages. If you are planning from a distance, ask what language the contract is in, how deposits are paid and whether a video call is included. Read working with a floral designer remotely.
Villa and hotel rules
As on the other lakes, many historic villas and hotels on Garda have precise rules for suppliers. The most common: fixed set-up and breakdown times, no fixings on walls and balustrades, candles only in closed holders or LED, limits on petals and paper confetti. Some venues work with trusted suppliers or require insurance. Ask for the written rules before your florist prepares the proposal, so you do not design something that cannot be installed. On candles, read flowers and candles.
After the party
Ask whether breakdown happens straight after the party or the next morning, and whether the venue has other events the following day. If materials must go back to the other shore or by boat, extra time and people are needed. Giving flowers to guests or leaving them at the villa should be decided in advance. Read what to do with your flowers after the wedding.
Questions to ask your floral designer
- Have you worked at this villa, lemon house or civic venue before?
- How do you secure outdoor structures against the lake wind?
- Which times of day are calmer for the ceremony in our area?
- How do you handle access in Sirmione or other historic centres?
- Where does your team travel from, and how much does travel add?
- What is the plan for a storm?
- Who moves the flowers between ceremony and reception?
Final thoughts
Garda combines an almost Mediterranean climate with the landscape of the northern lakes. The right florist knows the winds, access routes and venues on your shore. If you are comparing lakes, read the guide to Lake Como, or the one on Venice if you are thinking of a celebration between lake and city.
