Lake Como wedding: venues, costs and flowers

Planning a Lake Como wedding: villas and venues, getting there, seasons and weather, indicative costs, then flowers, villa rules and florist questions.

By Flower Designer Italia editorial team ·

In short

  • On Lake Como weddings often take place in historic villas with gardens, which set precise rules for suppliers.
  • Some venues are reached by boat, and guests, suppliers and flowers travel the same way.
  • It is one of the most expensive places to marry in Italy: plan from the upper end of the national ranges.
  • Hydrangeas, roses and greenery suit the gardens and the water; humidity and fast-changing weather need a written rain plan.

A Lake Como wedding draws couples from all over the world, not only Italians. Bellagio, Cernobbio, the Tremezzina, Varenna: historic villas, formal Italian gardens, terraces on the water. For flowers it is a rich but demanding setting. This guide starts with the place: where to marry, how to get there, when to go and what it costs. Then it moves on to the flowers and what to ask your florist. To see who works in the area, open the list of floral designers on Lake Como.

Typical Lake Como wedding venues

VenueWhat it offersWhat affects the flowers
Historic villa with gardenTerraces, statues, staircases, boathousesHeritage rules, approved suppliers, tight time slots
Lakeside hotelFull service, terracesOther guests, short set-up windows
Village churchChurchyards on the lake, bell towersParish rules, pedestrian access
Restaurant or terraceTables over the waterLimited space, wind off the lake
BoatThe couple's arrival, aperitivoWeight, stability, safety

Many villas are listed heritage buildings. What can be done is decided by the owners, not by the florist.

Getting to Lake Como

Most guests fly into one of the Milan airports (Malpensa or Linate) or into Bergamo, then continue by car, shuttle or train. Como, at the southern tip, is the easiest town to reach; the villages in the middle of the lake, such as Bellagio, Tremezzo and Varenna, take longer, and the lakeside roads are narrow and slow in summer. Varenna has a railway station on the eastern shore.

Once on the lake, public ferries link the main villages, and private boats are often hired for the couple and the guests. A few practical points:

  • book shuttle buses between hotels and venue, because parking in the villages is scarce;
  • check the last ferry times if guests stay on another shore;
  • allow extra time on summer weekends, when roads and ferries are busy;
  • tell guests early which town to stay in, so transfers stay simple.

The same narrow roads and jetties affect your suppliers, which is why logistics show up in almost every Lake Como quote.

Seasons, weather and humidity

The wedding season on the lake runs roughly from April to October, with June and September the most requested months. Many villas and hotels close in winter. The lake creates its own microclimate: muggy summer days, damp evenings, sudden storms, wind picking up in the afternoon. For the day, and for the flowers, this means:

  • delicate flowers suffer more from humidity than from dry heat;
  • fabric and paper get damp (seating plans, place cards);
  • outdoor structures must be well secured;
  • an indoor rain plan must be decided in advance.
PeriodWhat to expect
April-MayGardens in bloom, cool nights, possible rain
June-JulyIn high demand, humid heat, afternoon storms
AugustHeat, Italian holidays, busy villages
September-OctoberSoft light, less humidity, shorter days

For rain, read plan B: flowers, marquees and gazebos.

What a Lake Como wedding costs

Lake Como sits at the top end of the Italian wedding market. Villa fees for exclusive use, often with a minimum spend on catering, a season that runs mainly from May to September, and boats and porterage for every supplier push the whole budget up. For a breakdown by item, with sample budgets for 30, 80 and 150 guests and a section on the Lake Como wedding cost, read how much a wedding in Italy costs.

Flowers

There is no Lake Como price list for flowers, and every villa is different. As a starting point, our guide to how much wedding flowers cost in Italy gives indicative ranges for the whole country: roughly €1,800 to €4,000 for 60 guests with a civil or symbolic ceremony at a villa, and €3,500 to €8,000 for 120 guests with a church ceremony and a villa reception. They are orientation figures, not quotes. On the lake, as in other destination hotspots, quotes usually fall in the upper part of these ranges.

On the lake, a few items often come on top:

  • boat transport for flowers, materials and staff, when the venue is reached by water;
  • porterage: carrying everything by hand along jetties, staircases and garden paths;
  • villa time slots: tight set-up windows and night-time breakdown can mean more people or surcharges;
  • travel and overnight stays for the team, if the florist comes from further away;
  • two set-ups, when church and villa are on different shores.

Ask for these items as separate lines in the quote, so you can compare like with like.

Elopements and small ceremonies on the lake

Lake Como is also chosen by couples marrying alone or with a few guests. Here the flowers focus on a few pieces: bouquet, buttonhole and a small ceremony backdrop on a terrace, in a garden or on a jetty. Even for a small ceremony the venue rules apply, and for public spaces such as lakefronts and viewpoints you usually need permits from the Comune (the local council). Always ask first.

One advantage of a small ceremony is flexibility: you can choose a weekday or a morning, when the light is soft and the lake calmer. With fewer flowers you can also go for more delicate varieties, because they spend less time out of water. Read eloping in Italy.

Villa rules

This is the first thing to clarify. The most common rules in historic villas:

  • no nails, screws or tape on walls, balustrades or statues;
  • no arrangements placed directly on marble or antique surfaces without protection;
  • candles only in closed holders or LED only, and in some areas no flames at all;
  • petals and paper confetti banned or limited;
  • set times for set-up and breakdown, sometimes with surcharges for night hours;
  • in some cases, a list of approved suppliers.

Ask for the rules in writing and send them to your florist before they prepare the proposal. Also read flowers and candles.

Deliveries by boat

Some villas and terraces are easier, or only possible, to reach from the water. Even where there is a road, lake villages have narrow streets and little parking. Boat transport changes the work:

  • materials are loaded and unloaded by hand on jetties and boathouses;
  • times must be agreed with the skipper and the villa;
  • large structures must be designed to come apart;
  • weather can slow or stop the crossings.

Ask whether water transport is planned and how it is charged. The cost of a Lake Como wedding depends a lot on items like this; you will find the typical ones in extra costs in a floral set-up.

Hydrangeas and gardens

Hydrangeas are almost a symbol of the lake gardens, along with camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons in spring. Many couples want them in their design, and it is a choice that works well with water and greenery.

A few cautions:

  • hydrangeas drink a lot: in the heat they wilt fast without water;
  • those in the villa gardens are not cut: cultivated hydrangeas are used instead;
  • their season is mainly late spring to summer.

Style

Lake villas often call for classic, romantic designs, with roses, hydrangeas and plenty of greenery. But your style is free: a minimal set-up in front of an 18th-century facade, or a contemporary one on a modern terrace, can work very well. Start from the architecture and the light, not from a cliché.

Flowers on the couple's boat

On the lake many couples arrive at the ceremony or reception by boat. Decorating the boat is possible, but with clear rules:

  • arrangements must be light and firmly fixed, because the boat moves and the wind blows;
  • nothing that gets in the way of the skipper or the safety passages;
  • no loose water in open vases;
  • the boat owner decides what can be attached and where.

Small touches at the bow or stern, matched to the bouquet, are usually enough. Ask your florist to speak directly with whoever runs the boat.

From church to villa

Often the ceremony is in a village church and the reception at a villa on the other shore or a few kilometres away. Church flowers can be reused, but they must be taken down, loaded, transported and set up again while the guests move. With narrow lake roads and summer traffic, this takes extra people and careful timing. Sometimes two separate set-ups, one for the church and one for the villa, are better than rushing. Your florist will tell you what is realistic. On church rules, read church wedding flowers.

Timing and coordination

On a lake where many villas host several events a week, timings are tight. Coordinate florist, wedding planner and caterer on:

  • who arrives first and where they unload;
  • where flowers are kept cool;
  • who moves the flowers from church to villa, often by boat;
  • when breakdown happens and who collects the hire items.

Read set-up and breakdown.

After the party

In lake villas breakdown often has strict times, sometimes straight after the party ends. If materials leave by boat, extra people and an agreed time with the skipper are needed. Ask whether breakdown is included and what happens to the flowers: giving them to guests or leaving them at the villa should be decided in advance. Read what to do with your flowers after the wedding.

Questions to ask your floral designer

  • Have you worked at this villa? Are you on its approved supplier list, if it has one?
  • Do you know its rules on candles, petals and fixings?
  • Is transport by road or by water? Is it included?
  • How do you handle hydrangeas in humid heat?
  • What is the plan for a storm? How long does it take to move the set-up?
  • How many people do you bring for set-up and breakdown?

Final thoughts

On Lake Como the beauty is already there. The florist's job is to fit into villas and gardens while respecting their rules and managing water and weather. If you are comparing lakes, read the guide to Lake Garda, or the complete guide to a destination wedding in Italy.

Frequently asked questions

Do Lake Como villas have rules about wedding flowers?

Almost always, and often very precise ones. Many historic villas ban nails, tape and anything resting on statues and balustrades, limit candles and petals and set tight set-up times. Some only work with approved suppliers. Ask for the rules in writing.

When are hydrangeas in bloom on Lake Como?

Usually from late spring through summer, peaking in June and July, though it depends on the year and the garden. Hydrangeas in villa gardens are not cut for decoration: your florist uses cultivated ones.

Do the flowers arrive by boat?

For venues reachable only by water, or with difficult road access, yes. Boat transport needs planning, extra people and agreed times. Ask whether it is included in your quote.

What happens if it rains at our Lake Como wedding?

Weather on the lake can change quickly. Villas often have indoor halls or loggias; otherwise marquees are used. Agree in advance with your florist which pieces move and who moves them.
